Size does matter

Size does matter, and I will try to explain why I feel this way.

In the world of sports, size does matter a lot. A strong, muscular, tall person usually have its advantages over a smaller sized person. A taller person have longer limbs, can reach a higher vertical point at a faster timing, a strong person can get to a horizontal point with more ease. But what about being slower than smaller sized people? Think about players like Micheal Jordan, Lebron James. They tower (in the Asian content) over average people, but their speed is amazing. Speed (and strength) can be trained, but size cannot be. A taller person will always remain taller.

A bigger economy have many advantages over a smaller economy. A larger economy have a larger consumer market. Small economies lead to the formation of natural monopolies because certain industries have high starting (fixed) capital that need a huge market to at least break even. The rest is pure Econ101 (deadweight lost, no competition). Anti-competition laws in America are unsuitable in small open economies in Singapore because natural monopolies are a necessities. The small consumer market does not allow companies like SBS and SMRT to try to via for the small consumers with high starting and operating cost.

A larger economy usually also means a larger job market, and along with it a larger variety of jobs. Certain jobs need that many people to support it. How many insurance agents do you need? Or Real estate agents? Or painters? Actors? Chiefs? Pardon me for the lack of create jobs to mention, because from I stay, variety is the last thing on our minds. Job security, prestige and wage are the more important factors in job selection.

I ran out of ideas that support that size does matter. Yet, sometimes, being smaller size does help too! Smaller usually means more nimble, more flexible and faster. Speed in sports, speed in execution, and smaller usually means control with greater ease. Sometimes, size does not mean a need to be big, but the fact is, size does matter =)
