Since last night, I have been going through 2 Internet big giants, at least in my opinion. Yahoo and Google. Both have widgets, utilities that you download and use on your desktop. Amazing, I have not found a true monopoly of utilities that make me stick to one. Here is why.
Google Goods:
1) they have a great mailing system, very spam free, and I first heard about their Google Chat before Yahoo introduced theirs. Simplicity is the key, and for me, it makes presentation clear, concise, and most importantly, loading time is greatly reduced, i.e. time is saved.
2) they have this great application in which you can create online documents and store them somewhere online. In fact, I am using its document application now. Clear, simple yet again, and most importantly, I need not follow the rest and install office, and whatever I have written can be uploaded, ready for easy access. It also includes applications to create spreadsheets, and conversion into mainstream documents is very available. For people that have problems with spelling, its spell check is pretty awesome, although I don't think it has grammar checks. Well, that should be under a bad I guess. Also, FYI, it also supports Mandarin, and I have been using that ability very much!!!
3) its Google Calendar is very user friendly, especially its quick add. Very intuitive, as though it really understands English, even in the broken sense that we Singaporeans use. Cool!
4) real cool iGoogle, but there is still a lacking in Asian presence.
5) The best of all, Google Desktop, that helps you search stuff. I do not know about other users, but it had helped me with finding files on my desktop that I thought I have lost, and all types of files included.
6) it has too many applications for me to really discuss. Picassa, the photo sharing application (I have not really used this, because I am super lazy when it comes to sorting photos), and not to say Google Earth, YouTube.com, Blogger.com to name a few, and their integration of application usage from one to another.
Google Bad:
1) Google Desktop always get some kind of intrusion warning from my virus detection software, so that makes me wary. It also loads a while, although that's my fault, because I have an old computer.
2) Widgets are not very Asian friendly, as I will explain more in Yahoo Goods.
Yahoo Goods:
1) their widgets are a real great mix of useful applications and interesting cuties. Amazingly, it has a stock ticker that can be customised to have shares from the SGX, something that Google do not have. Thus, I have to keep track of the SGX using Yahoo Widgets. Its NotePad application is really cool too, much more friendly than Google's one.
2) compared to iGoogle, the My Yahoo promises more customisation in colour, especially its considerations to Asian users.
3) I am a more common user of Yahoo Mail, but not that its better, but because I have been using Yahoo Mail for some time, and I am lazy to tell everyone that I have Gmail now.
4) Yahoo Groups is much more established in this side of the world than Google Groups. Its more of a network effect than really which one is better. Well, maybe we will all switch in the near future.
Yahoo Bads:
Everything thats a Google Good is a Yahoo Bad. Done!
I hope my description helps people in search of better management tools. I would say both have their cools and un-cools, and it purely is a personal preference. As for me, I am using the best from both worlds, although a monopoly would makes things much cooler and easier.
