Who supports writers?

'I hold a day job because I do not want to be a starving writer'.

This was said by some writer that won some writing award. Its actually quite sad that I do not even know his name, or the name of the award. Looking in from my own country, I only know Catherine Lim, because she wrote for my secondary school literature text. Is the writer for some ghost story, the one that always mask himself, considered a local writer too? Something Russell I think.

The only rare few fiction books that I have read for the past few years are 'The Da Vinci Code'... Oops, that's it. No more. Well, I am in FASS, reading academic text is more important than fiction. So does reading financial reports and news analysis of companies. Where does the time for intellectual interaction with come in? Non-fiction books, I have read plenty. Now, I am reading 'The Essence of War". Its something about Chinese warfare strategies. I read before a book on game theory, written about Thomas Schelling. I have read books about finance, stock investments, but most of them have been returned to the books. Reading is quite useless unless I really am able to retain the knowledge.

Maybe I'm lousy. Maybe I'm not knowledgeable. However, is it strange that I to be a writer? At least thats a thought I have. To spread my views about this world, to create worlds of my own, to create worlds for others, to help create a better world. The power of words are plenty and strong. I hope some day, I will be able to hold them well and execute the excellence civilisation gave upon us.
